Residents’ Committees (RCs) islandwide will undergo large-scale restructuring to better represent the needs of their local communities, reported The Straits Times.
Under this initiative, all 572 RCs will choose themes which reflect the demographic profile and interests of residents in the area such as family, sports, recycling, arts and culture, noted Lim Swee Say (pictured), Minister in the Prime Minister's Office and Deputy Chairman, People's Association.
The revamped centres will also have extended opening hours and are to be run by a hired manager instead of volunteers.
Mr Lim added that the changes will be a “major turning point” for RCs, and will see the centres at void decks transformed into “club houses” which residents can use to hold private functions.
Responding, Dr Lim Wee Kiak, Adviser of Residents Committee Council, said: "RCs should not just be tuition centres and karaoke centres for the residents. I'm happy to see that now each RC will be catering to the unique requirements of the community that it serves."
