The government will shift Paya Lebar Air Base to Changi East in order to free up 800ha of land for homes, parks, offices and factories, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong during Sunday’s National Day Rally.

Aside from providing a land area larger than Bishan or Ang Mo Kio, the relocation of the air base will remove existing height restrictions around the vicinity, allowing the authorities to develop new and exciting plans for eastern Singapore.

“If you move the airbase, you remove the height restrictions on a big area around the airbase. That frees us to develop new, exciting plans for the big chunk of eastern Singapore, going all the way down to Marina and Marina South,” Mr Lee noted.

The container ports in Brani, Keppel, Pasir Panjang and Tanjong Pagar will also be relocated to a larger and more efficient facility in Tuas by 2027.

This will free up much-needed land in the Tanjong Pagar area where a southern waterfront metropolis will be built. Sited on 1,000ha of land or 2.5 times the size of Marina Bay, the new city will stretch from Pasir Panjang to Shenton Way.

The government will also build a fifth terminal at Changi Airport to boost its capacity by two-fold.
