SG New life breathed into Yishun

The Housing and Development Board (HDB) is on track with its rejuvenation efforts for Yishun under the Remaking Our Heartland (ROH) programme.

Showcasing some of the highlights, a three-day exhibition from 28 to 30 June called “Transforming Yishun: Rejuvenating the Town Centre” was launched by Foreign Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam.

Notably, a mixed development site was put up for sale on Friday. Aside from offering housing units and retail spaces, the future project will also comprise a community club and air-conditioned bus interchange.

Meanwhile, malls in the area have been upgraded to provide a more conducive shopping environment. Yishun has also seen the rise of recreational and medical facilities such as The Spiral@Yishun – a three-storey lookout tower, and the Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (pictured).

To encourage residents to enjoy outdoor activities, the housing board also built a Family Bay and Rowers’ Bay at Lower Seletar Reservoir, upgraded Yishun Park and set up a dedicated 15.5 km cycling path.

Efforts to preserve Yishun’s history have also been undertaken. Over at Yishun-Sembawang Heritage Trail, a heritage trail brochure will guide visitors through historical landmarks including the Old Nee Soon Village, Chong Pang City and Old Admiralty House.

The launch of the ROH programme has also seen the addition of over 17,000 new private and public housing units to Yishun. 

Two upgrading programmes – the Home Improvement Programme (HIP) and Neighbourhood Renewal Programme (NRP) – have been implemented since 2007. HIP offers residents “a range of improvements within the flat at heavily subsidised costs”, while NRP “upgrades the block and precinct at no cost to the residents”.

Moreover, ongoing road enhancement works are set to ease traffic along Lentor Avenue and Yishun Avenue 2, improving overall accessibility in Yishun.
