National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan launched HDB Community Week 2013 on Wednesday, which aims to encourage the public to play an active role in community-building.

This year’s theme is “Celebrating L.I.F.E in the Heartlands” and the event will run till 9 June. It features a series of activities that cater to different parts of the community.

One of the highlights is a photography exhibition showcasing 38 winning entries chosen from over 3,500 submissions received by the HDB.

There is also a carnival-cum-exhibition designed to raise awareness on community-participation among the youth.

Meanwhile the housing board has signed an agreement with the National University of Singapore Centre for Sustainable Asian Cities and the Department of Sociology to look into the impact of the built environment on community bonding.

A total of 2,400 residents from six chosen estates will be surveyed to determine how communal facilities help enhance social interaction in the community. The six sites are Jalan Membina, Toa Payoh Lorong 4 and 5, Toa Payoh Central, Yishun Street 71, Bukit Panjang Ring Road and Edgedale Plains in Punggol East.
