More than 1,700 households have applied for HDB’s Enhancement for Active Seniors (EASE) scheme since it was piloted in July 2012, according to National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan.

In a new blog post, Mr Khaw said EASE which aims to improve facilities for the elderly by retrofitting homes with grab bars in toilets or slip-resistant treatment on floors at a minimal cost of between five to 12.5 percent depending on the flat type, was “useful and popular”.

First introduced in the Bukit Merah and Kallang/Whampoa estates, the scheme is now available islandwide, with hospitals helping to raise awareness to its elderly patients. A mobile app to receive applications was also recently launched.

“To reach out to more senior residents, HDB officers have come up with some rather innovative methods to promote awareness of EASE. Recognising that our seniors may be more comfortable communicating in their mother tongues or dialects, they have produced videos to explain the features and benefits of EASE in different languages and dialects,” noted Mr Khaw.
