JOHN Malins says his home smells like a hamburger if he doesn't keep the doors and windows shut, particularly on the weekend.
Mr Malins lives on St David's Rd near the Haberfield McDonalds, in Sydney's inner west, and complained to his local council, Ashfield, about continuous odours coming from the site on April 25 and 26.
"In recent times (the smell) has been very strong. It starts very early in the morning . . . and on Friday, April 26, it was just a total disgrace. It's a very strong, cooked oil smell,'' he said.
"We want McDonalds to contain the function of their business on their property. It's not the community's responsibility to absorb all the smell or the smoke.''
A spokesman for Ashfield Council said that a report on the problem had been prepared in February by McDonald's.
The report recommended actions to improve the efficiency of odour control units, which was to be completed within three months.
The report found unacceptable odour impacts at several locations and recommended an engineering review be completed and any rectification works be performed.
McDonald's did not respond to the Inner West Courier's request for comment.
